Anxiety disorders affect millions of people a year in the United States. Yet, many people are unaware that lifestyle habits influence the severity of the signs of anxiety. Changing how you eat, move, and sleep can make a difference in your stress and anxiety levels.
The Signs of Anxiety
The signs of anxiety are varied, and not everyone experiences the symptoms the same way. For example, you may feel more on edge and emotional while your best friend experiences full-blown panic attacks.
Common signs of anxiety include:
- Mood swings and agitation
- Feeling on edge or irritable
- Excessive worry or fear
- Unable to concentrate
- Racing thoughts
- Forgetting more
- Rapid heart rate or palpitations
- Excessive sweating
- Problems with sleep and appetite
- Weight changes
- Feelings of panic or dread
- Panic attacks
The signs of anxiety can interfere with your job, home life, relationships, and social life. Don’t withdraw from life because of anxiety. You can overcome it with lifestyle changes. If you need more support, counseling is available.
Lifestyle Changes You Can Make Today
The lifestyle changes listed below are not tricky but work in the long term to lower cortisol levels and reduce anxiety. You cannot get by on two hours of sleep for months and then sleep one eight-hour night and expect all of your anxiety to go away immediately. Make these changes a part of your daily routine. Build them into your daily habits and practice them. Eventually, they will become second nature, and you will notice a decrease in anxiety symptoms.
Exercise more Exercising daily triggers the release of chemicals that lower stress hormones, boost mood, and make it easier to manage stress and emotions. Aim for 30 minutes of exercise most days.
Avoid substances Substances like alcohol, caffeine, drugs, and nicotine can worsen anxiety symptoms. Stop them cold or seek help for a withdrawal plan if you are concerned about withdrawal symptoms due to addiction.
Eat healthier Ultra-processed foods contribute to anxiety and depression symptoms as well as physical conditions. Choose whole and minimally processed foods as much as possible. Shop the perimeter of the grocery store or patronize farmers’ markets.
Practice deep breathing Deep breathing forces oxygen into the bloodstream, oxygenating cells and helping to lower anxiety levels. Try inhaling deeply through your nose, holding for a few seconds, and then exhaling slowly through your mouth. Repeat as necessary.
Check your sleep hygiene Sleep is critical for the body and the brain’s ability to process, rest, and recover. Create a nighttime routine to signal to your brain that it is time to sleep. Don’t watch television or other screens within two hours of bed. Instead, bathe, slip into something comfy, brew a warm (decaffeinated or herbal) drink, and relax with a book or music.
Create a social network Social connections keep us in the fold. We are not meant to be isolated. Reach out to friends and reconnect. Plan a weekly or monthly get-together. Run a baked good over to the neighbor and chat for a bit. Challenge yourself to attend a social event once a month.
A counselor can suggest more lifestyle and self-care tips as well as introduce you to psychotherapy methods such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to manage the signs of anxiety.
