Learning how to cope with change begins with accepting that change is an inevitable part of life. All of us make plans, hope for the best, prepare for the worst, and strive to be content in whatever state we are currently in. The Bible has a small section of books known as Wisdom Literature. It includes the books of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Job, the Psalms, and the Song of Solomon. For today, let us look at a selection of Bible verses about change from Ecclesiastes.

Bible Verses About Change from Ecclesiastes

Knowing the future is one way that people try to feel in control, but there is little that we can actually know.

Since no one knows the future, who can tell someone else what is to come? As no one has power over the wind to contain it, so no one has power over the time of their death. – Ecclesiastes 8:7-8a, NIV

Whole stories are devoted to the concept of what people would do if they could see the future. Think about the beloved holiday classic, A Christmas Carol. Scrooge is offered a chance to see his future and change because of it. Yet not all people would make that decision. So, instead of pondering the maybes and what-ifs, make decisions that you will look back on with grace and hope.

The Paradox of Change

All streams flow into the sea, yet the sea is never full. To the place the streams come from, there they return again. – Ecclesiastes 1:7, NIV

While we cannot predict the future, certain rhythms and consequences can be anticipated from specific actions. Some of it is the straightforward earth science that many of us know and believe. The rising and setting of the sun, the turning of the seasons, the infinity of the water cycle.

These things are always the same and constantly changing. Everyone will make mistakes, and we all hope that tomorrow we have a chance to do better than we did the day before.

What change could you make today that you will feel glad for in the future?

The Product of Change

He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil – this is the gift of God. Ecclesiastes 3:11-13, NIV

When you look back on your life, can you see the beauty that has come after a hard time? Change forces us to grow and stretch in ways that are often uncomfortable and unpleasant. It is in hindsight that we frequently see the results more clearly than when we are in the midst of the change. Note the last phrase of the above verses, “this is the gift of God.”
What changes have you been through before that turned out better than you could have imagined? When have you been able to see change as a gift?

The Point of Change

When I applied my mind to know wisdom and to observe the labor that is done on earth – people getting no sleep day or night – then I saw all that God has done. No one can comprehend what goes on under the sun. Despite all their efforts to search it out, no one can discover its meaning. Even if the wise claim they know, they cannot really comprehend it.Ecclesiastes 8:16-17, NIV

Science cannot explain everything, and psychology cannot unlock all the mysteries of the human mind. Faith in the tender care of God is essential for navigating any kind of change. Going through a season of change in your life is an opportunity to practice your faith in God’s good work.

However, even your best efforts and most cherished faith may not yield the results you desire. At the end of the day, at the end of your life, it is all going to be part of the story of who God is making you to be.

The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all. – Ecclesiastes 9:11, NIV
